Speaking in Berlin, Peter Vyvyan-Robinson, EUROWATCH Director, welcomed the addition of these countries and emphasised their importance in the fight against vehicle and freight crime.  He pointed out that volumes of high value freight moving by road are rising in both Turkey and South Africa and that Turkey is growing in popularity as a low cost manufacturing base to serve European markets.

He commented that the service had already recently saved a high value load being transported by a Turkish operator.  “The tractor unit and trailer were stolen from a rest stop in Italy whilst the driver was away from his vehicle. As the Turkey operator had fitted a GPS tracking system, they were able to track its movements with precision. They called EUROWATCH immediately and we notified the Italian police who were able to quickly locate the vehicle and secure its €150,000 load”.

During 2007 EUROWATCH is planning to extend coverage to the Middle East and the Ukraine.
